The Black and White Checkered Pumpkin Machine Embroidery Design combines bold monochrome squares with a sculptural green stem and foliage. The geometric pattern creates a strong fall and Halloween motif, while the organic leaves soften the graphic look. This is a densely filled design, so choose the stabilizer according to the fabric.

Madeira Classic 40 color chart

The design uses six thread colors and seven color steps. Madeira Classic 1006 is repeated during the final stage.

Color Madeira Classic 40 Stitched area
1004 — dark gray dark checkered sections
1144 — light beige light checkered sections
1006 — graphite outlines, seams and final details
1239 — gray brown tonal shading in the checkered pattern
1170 — dark olive green stem and darker foliage
1168 — light olive green leaves and lighter green details

Fabric and stabilizer choices

  • Linen and firm woven cotton: use a heavy tear-away such as Madeira Cotton Soft 60 or Cotton Soft 80, or Gunold Pop Away. For lighter woven fabric, use two layers placed at right angles.
  • Knit, sweatshirt fleece and stretch fabric: use a permanent cut-away such as Madeira E-ZEE Green Cut 45 or Gunold Soft n' Sheer. Hoop without stretching the fabric.
  • Terry cloth: place Madeira E-ZEE Green Cut 45 or Gunold Soft n' Sheer underneath. Add Madeira Avalon or Gunold Solvy 20 mil on top so the checks and fine outlines remain above the loops.

A good starting point is quality 40 wt machine embroidery thread with a 75/11 or 80/12 embroidery needle. The final needle choice depends on the fabric thickness, stabilizer and thread.

Important: the design contains dense filled areas. Test the complete design on matching fabric with the same stabilizer before embroidering the finished item.

Practical embroidery tips

  • When using two tear-away layers, place them in different directions. This supports the nearly square design against pull from both stitch directions.
  • Hoop the fabric straight on the grain. A small diagonal distortion is especially visible in a checkered pattern.
  • Keep strong value contrast between the two checker colors. Similar shades can make the squares merge after stitching.
  • On terry cloth or fleece, use water-soluble topping and choose a fabric color that contrasts with both checker colors.
  • If the reverse will remain visible, use a clean-removing tear-away stabilizer and a bobbin thread that coordinates with the outline.
  • Do not reduce the design in embroidery software. Its fill density, outlines and checker proportions are calculated for the supplied sizes.

Frequently asked questions

What hoop size do I need?

The first two files fit a 100x100 mm (3.94x3.94") embroidery field. The largest file requires a 130x180 mm (5.12x7.09") hoop or larger. Rotating the nearly square design will not make the largest size fit a 100x100 mm field.

Can I change the pumpkin colors?

Yes. Keep strong contrast between the light and dark checks. The black-and-white palette may be replaced with orange and cream, burgundy and beige, or another contrasting fall combination.

Which stabilizer should I use for this dense design?

For stable cotton or linen, choose Madeira Cotton Soft 60 or 80, or Gunold Pop Away. For knit, sweatshirt fleece or stretch fabric, use permanent cut-away such as Madeira E-ZEE Green Cut 45 or Gunold Soft n' Sheer. On terry cloth, add Madeira Avalon or Gunold Solvy 20 mil as a water-soluble topping. Test the complete fabric, backing, topping and thread combination before stitching the finished item.

Is this a finished embroidery or a digital file?

This is a digital machine embroidery design. The embroidery files become available for download after purchase; no finished item will be shipped.
