How to Position the Design on a Napkin

For a corner placement, position the center of the smallest design approximately 75–100 mm (3–4") from both finished edges. The exact distance depends on the size of the napkin, the width of its hem and the way it will be folded.

Print a full-size template or use the placement grid supplied with your embroidery machine. Fold the napkin as it will appear on the table and confirm that the peppers and inscription remain visible.

When making a coordinated dining set, use the same design size and placement measurements on every napkin. Mark the horizontal and vertical axes before hooping.

Recommended Fabrics

The chilli pepper frame is best suited to stable woven fabrics:

• medium-weight cotton;
• linen weighing approximately 150–200 g/m² or more;
• cotton-linen blends;
• smooth kitchen-towel fabric;
• canvas and duck cloth;
• firm twill;
• non-stretch fabric for placemats and table runners.

Prewash, dry and press cotton or linen before embroidery. Natural fabric may shrink during the first wash and distort the square frame if it is embroidered without preparation.

Which Stabilizer Should I Use?

For stable cotton or linen napkins, use a light- to medium-weight tear-away stabilizer. On loosely woven fabric, attach the backing with temporary embroidery adhesive or use an adhesive tear-away stabilizer.

For canvas placemats, aprons and tote bags, a medium-weight tear-away stabilizer normally provides sufficient support. If the fabric is soft, stretchy or likely to be washed frequently, use a medium-weight cut-away stabilizer.

On waffle-weave towels, place a water-soluble film over the fabric. The topping prevents the inscription and smaller decorative stitches from sinking between the raised sections of the material.

Needle, Thread and Embroidery Speed

• Use a fresh 75/11 embroidery needle for cotton and medium-weight linen.
• Choose an 80/12 needle for canvas, duck cloth or a heavy apron.
• Use 40-weight polyester embroidery thread for washable kitchen textiles.
• Use 40-weight rayon for decorative napkins or panels that require additional shine.
• Embroider at approximately 600–700 stitches per minute.
• Reduce the speed when stitching small lettering or detailed pepper stems.

Combine dark burgundy, bright red and orange-red threads to give the peppers more dimension. Two shades of green can separate the leaves and stems. On dark fabric, choose lighter greens and brighter reds to maintain contrast.

How to Hoop a Napkin Without Distorting It

1. Wash, dry and press the napkin before marking it.
2. Mark the center and both design axes.
3. Place the stabilizer beneath the fabric.
4. Align the marks with the hoop template.
5. Hoop the layers evenly without stretching the napkin.
6. Tighten the hoop screw so that the fabric cannot shift.
7. Check that the marked center matches the machine needle position.
8. Run the machine’s outline or trace function before embroidery.

If a thick hem prevents level hooping, float the napkin on an adhesive stabilizer. Keep the hem outside the stitching path and make sure that the presser foot cannot catch it.

How to Prevent Puckering and Misaligned Outlines

1. Use fabric that can support the selected stitch count.
2. Choose a stabilizer appropriate for the fabric structure.
3. Do not stretch the fabric while hooping.
4. Use a new needle and good-quality thread.
5. Check the upper and bobbin threading before starting.
6. Reduce the machine speed on loosely woven material.
7. Do not pull the stabilizer aggressively after embroidery.
8. Press the finished design from the reverse side over a soft towel.
