Fabric and Stabilizer Recommendations

Medium-weight cotton or linen: use a medium-weight tear-away stabilizer. For loosely woven linen or an item that will be washed regularly, a medium-weight cut-away stabilizer provides more permanent support.

Waffle towels: use cut-away or adhesive stabilizer underneath and a lightweight water-soluble topping over the fabric. The topping prevents small ornamental stitches from sinking between the raised threads.

Terry towels: combine cut-away backing with water-soluble topping. Do not pull or stretch the towel while hooping.

Canvas and market bags: use medium-weight tear-away or cut-away backing depending on the stiffness of the bag. Avoid stitching through thick seams, folded edges or handles.

Faux suede: float the material on an adhesive stabilizer if direct hooping could leave permanent marks. Test the adhesive and hoop pressure on a scrap first.

Thread, Needle and Eggplant Colors

• Use a new 75/11 embroidery needle for medium-weight cotton and linen.
• Use an 80/12 embroidery needle for canvas, dense aprons or heavy bags.
• Choose 40-weight polyester thread for towels and frequently washed kitchen textiles.
• Choose 40-weight rayon thread for decorative napkins, framed embroidery and items that need a softer, lustrous finish.

Create a natural eggplant palette with deep aubergine, plum, violet and lavender threads. Use olive, leaf green or emerald for the stem and foliage. The motif can also be stitched in one color for a modern ornamental effect: charcoal, navy, burgundy, terracotta or antique gold all work well.

How to Prevent Fabric Puckering

1. Prewash and press cotton or linen before embroidery.
2. Choose a stabilizer that supports both the fabric and the selected design size.
3. Hoop the fabric smoothly without stretching it.
4. Use a new needle suitable for the fabric weight.
5. Do not increase upper-thread tension unless testing shows it is necessary.
6. Begin at approximately 600–700 stitches per minute.
7. Test stitch the complete design on a matching fabric sample.

Why is the fabric puckering around the embroidered eggplant?

Common causes include insufficient stabilizer, fabric stretched during hooping, excessive upper-thread tension, high stitching speed or shrinkage after washing. Test a firmer stabilizer and hoop the fabric without pulling it.

Can I change the purple and green thread colors?

Yes. You may substitute any thread colors without changing the stitch structure. Plum, burgundy, lavender, navy, terracotta and monochrome palettes can all produce attractive results.
