The Khokhloma Heart is a downloadable machine embroidery design featuring an ornate heart-shaped composition, fine folk-art details and an included inscription. Inspired by traditional Khokhloma decorative art, this large statement design is supplied in three original sizes for pillows, bags, jacket backs, wall panels and personalized folk-style gifts. This is a digital embroidery file, not a finished embroidered item.

The flowing ornament looks especially dramatic on black fabric, where red, gold and green thread colors can reproduce the traditional Khokhloma palette. A white background creates a lighter, more contemporary interpretation while preserving the ornamental character of the design.

Hoop requirements for each size

  • Size 174.2x198.3 mm (6.86x7.81") — Hoop: 180x300 mm (7x12")
  • Size 198.2x225.7 mm (7.80x8.89") — Hoop: 200x260 mm (8x10").
  • Size 271.2x238.2 mm (10.68x9.38") — Hoop: 240x360 mm (9.5x14"); rotate the design 90 degrees in the hoop.

Hoop names refer to the usable embroidery field, not the physical outside dimensions of the frame. Confirm the supported embroidery area and file format in your machine manual before transferring the design.

Projects for the Khokhloma Heart

  • a statement cushion or removable pillow cover;
  • the center panel of a large tote or travel bag;
  • the back of a denim, canvas or structured jacket;
  • a framed textile picture or folk-style wall hanging;
  • a decorative table centerpiece or fabric runner;
  • a wedding, anniversary or housewarming gift.

For a pillow, tote or fabric panel, stitch the design on the cut piece before assembling the finished item. This makes it easier to center the heart, hoop the fabric correctly and keep seams or zippers outside the embroidery field.

Stitching on black fabric

Black cotton twill, canvas, denim or other stable woven fabrics provide strong contrast for the ornamental lines. Mark the center with a removable fabric marker, attach a medium-weight cut-away stabilizer and hoop the fabric without stretching it.

Because the design contains many fine lines and small details, stable hoop tension is important. Run a test stitch using the same fabric, thread, needle and stabilizer planned for the final project. If the outlines shift or the fabric begins to pucker, review the hooping and stabilization before continuing.

For more practical guidance, read How to Prevent Puckering in Machine Embroidery.

Stitching the design on velvet

To decorate a velvet pillow or bag panel, hoop the stabilizer and secure the velvet over it without crushing the pile. Place a lightweight water-soluble film on top so that the fine stitches remain visible above the surface. Test any temporary adhesive on a fabric scrap before applying it to velvet.

Thread and color suggestions

Rayon embroidery thread gives the gold and red areas a soft, lustrous finish that works especially well for decorative pillows, wall art and ceremonial gifts.

Polyester embroidery thread is the more practical option for bags, jackets and removable pillow covers that may be washed or handled frequently.

Metallic gold thread can be used for selected accents. Do not replace every fine line with metallic thread without testing: metallic thread creates more friction and may break in detailed areas. Use a metallic needle, reduce the embroidery speed and test the selected color section first. See the guide How to Choose the Right Embroidery Machine Needle.

Can this design be made smaller?

This particular design should not be reduced. Its construction contains a large number of fine lines and tiny ornamental details digitized specifically for the supplied sizes. Independent resizing may change the stitch construction, registration and coverage. Royal Present Embroidery is responsible for the quality of the original files only.

If another size is required, contact Royal Present Embroidery before ordering a resizing service. A smaller version may not be technically possible for this design.

Create a coordinated Khokhloma collection

Use the heart as the central motif on a pillow or wall panel and combine it with the Russian Folk Khokhloma Border on a table runner, bag panel or coordinating textile accessory.

For a matching cushion or personalized household textile, add the Khokhloma Frame with Rowan. The frame repeats the curved leaves and berry motifs without duplicating the heart composition.

The Khokhloma Firebird Machine Embroidery Design can become a second statement piece on a jacket back, tote or decorative wall hanging.

Digital download and permitted use

After purchase, you receive a downloadable archive containing the listed machine embroidery formats. Extract the files from the ZIP folder and select the size and format supported by your embroidery machine.

The design may be used to make a limited number of finished embroidered products for sale. Bulk manufacturing and selling, sharing, exchanging or redistributing the digital embroidery files are not permitted.

Frequently asked questions

Is the inscription included with the Khokhloma Heart?

Yes. The inscription shown as part of the design is included in the embroidery files.

Which hoop fits each Khokhloma Heart size?

The first size fits a 200x200 mm (8x8") hoop. The second fits a 200x260 mm (8x10") hoop. The third fits a 240x360 mm (9.5x14") hoop when the design is rotated 90 degrees.

What stabilizer should I use for this detailed design?

Use a medium-weight cut-away stabilizer on stable woven fabric so the fine lines receive permanent support. For velvet or another textured surface, add a lightweight water-soluble film on top. Always test the complete fabric and stabilizer combination first.

Can I sell products embroidered with this design?

Yes. You may sell a limited number of finished physical products embroidered with the design. Bulk manufacturing and redistribution of the digital files are not permitted.
