What is included in this free embroidery collection

These are digital stitch files for embroidery machines, not finished patches, printed patterns or physical products. The collection contains compact motifs for quick projects as well as more detailed designs for experienced embroiderers.

Free designs in the store are a benefit for customers making a qualifying purchase. You may add as many $0 designs as you want, but the same order must include at least one paid design costing $3 or more.

4. Add at least one paid design priced at $3 or more.
5. Sign in or create a customer account.
6. Complete checkout and payment.
7. Download all free and paid files included in the order from your account.

Important: a cart containing only free store designs cannot be checked out. The free designs remain priced at $0; the paid design is the qualifying purchase required to complete the order.

Which embroidery file formats are available

File formats vary by product because the free collection includes both older and newer designs. Always use the Formats line on the individual product page as the final compatibility list.

• Current design files: DAT, DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, JEF+, JPX, PEC, PES, SEW, VIP, VP3, VP4 and XXX. The exact selection depends on the individual product.
• Older and legacy design files: ART, TAB and selected formats from the current list. Older machine or software versions may be required.

PES is commonly used by Brother and Baby Lock, JEF by Janome, HUS and VP3 by Husqvarna Viking, and DST by many commercial or multi-needle systems. Compatibility still depends on the exact machine model and software version.

A JPG, JPEG, PNG or PDF may be supplied as a preview, color chart or instruction document, but it is not a machine-readable stitch file.

Which hoop sizes are covered

Exact design sizes are stated on every product page and must be compared with the usable embroidery field of your machine. The category includes designs for fields ranging from 80×80 mm to 300×300 mm, but not every design is supplied in every size.

• Small fields: 80×80 mm and 100×100 mm. Check the exact design width and height; 4×4 is only a rounded hoop name.
• Medium fields: 100×170 mm, 130×180 mm, 140×140 mm, 140×200 mm and 140×220 mm. Confirm the official maximum stitching field for your machine model.
• Large and mega fields: 100×300 mm, 160×240 mm, 160×260 mm, 180×300 mm, 200×200 mm, 200×260 mm, 200×300 mm and 300×300 mm. Do not use the outside dimensions of the plastic hoop as the sewing field.

How to choose a compatible design

A design is compatible only when both its stitch format and exact dimensions meet your machine’s requirements. Check the following information before placing the order and before transferring the file:

• exact design width and height in millimetres;
• required embroidery format for the machine model;
• stitch count and number of color changes;
• fabric type and suitable stabilizer;
• whether the project requires appliqué fabric, freestanding lace materials or an in-the-hoop assembly sequence.

Test-stitch the design on fabric and stabilizer similar to the final project. Testing is especially important for knitwear, terry cloth, lightweight linen, dense motifs and projects requiring precise placement.

How to choose a design for your project

Choose by the finished item, fabric and usable embroidery field rather than by the picture alone. A design that works well on firm cotton may need a different size, stabilizer or construction method on knitwear, towels or freestanding lace.

• Towels and terry cloth: choose clear shapes and readable lettering. Use suitable backing and, when needed, a water-soluble topper.
• Shirts, sweatshirts and knitwear: choose moderate-density motifs, stabilize the stretch and test for puckering.
• Napkins, linens and lightweight cotton: use small motifs, corners, borders, monograms or open designs; check density and backing visibility.
• Bags, denim and firm woven fabric: decorative motifs, appliqué, monograms and denser designs work well; check seams, pockets and hardware before hooping.
• Ornaments and in-the-hoop projects: use files specifically identified for that technique and check the required fabric, batting or water-soluble stabilizer.

What you receive after payment

You receive digital files, not a physical embroidered item. The downloadable archive contains the machine formats offered for that product and may also include a color chart, stitch information or project instructions where stated in the description.

Unzip the archive on a computer or supported device before sending a file to the machine. Select only the format required by your machine, keep the original download as a backup and transfer the chosen stitch file by the method supported by your machine or software.

How to prepare the file for embroidery

Use the original file in the correct machine format and confirm its dimensions before transferring it. The color chart is a production guide, while thread colors can be adapted to the fabric and project unless the design instructions require a specific sequence.

1. Extract the downloaded files from the archive.
2. Open the color chart or preview and identify the correct design size.
3. Select the machine format listed for your embroidery machine.
4. Confirm that the displayed width and height fit the machine’s usable embroidery field.
5. Prepare the fabric, stabilizer, needle and embroidery thread for the project.
6. Transfer the stitch file and run a test on comparable fabric before embroidering the final item.

The color sequence shown on the machine may use generic screen colors rather than the exact thread shades in the preview. Follow the stitch order and use the supplied chart to plan thread changes.

Resizing and editing free embroidery files

Free designs may be edited for permitted personal or small-business projects, but changing the dimensions can affect density, underlay, stitch length and registration. Simple scaling by the embroidery machine does not always recalculate the stitch structure correctly.

Use embroidery software that can recalculate stitches, keep an unchanged copy of the original file and test the edited version before production. For appliqué, in-the-hoop projects, freestanding lace, borders and precisely aligned sets, even a small size change can alter placement lines or assembly accuracy.

Test stitching and stabilizer selection

A test stitch is the safest way to check the design, fabric and stabilizer as one system. Use a scrap or sample with similar weight, stretch, pile and fiber content to the finished item.

• Use cut-away stabilizer for projects that need continuing support, including many knits and garments.
• Use tear-away stabilizer for stable woven fabrics when the design density and finished reverse allow it.
• Use wash-away stabilizer for freestanding lace and projects where the stabilizer must be removed completely.
• Add a water-soluble topper on towels, fleece or other textured surfaces when stitches could sink into the pile.
• Check the test for puckering, gaps, shifting outlines, thread breaks and coverage before changing the final fabric or thread.

These are starting points rather than universal settings. The correct combination depends on the design density, fabric, hooping method, needle, thread and machine.

Common download and compatibility problems

Most file problems are caused by an unextracted archive, the wrong machine format or a design that exceeds the machine’s usable field. Check the original product specifications before converting or editing a file.

• The machine does not display the design: extract the archive, select a supported stitch format, verify the filename and follow the required transfer procedure.
• The machine reports that the design is too large: compare the exact width and height with the maximum stitching field, not the outside hoop measurement.
• The preview opens but the machine file does not: JPG, JPEG, PNG and PDF files are reference documents. Transfer the compatible stitch file.
• Outlines shift or areas do not align: check hooping tension, stabilizer, fabric movement and whether the file was resized or converted.
• The finished embroidery puckers: review stabilizer strength, hooping, thread tension and design density, then test again.

License for free and paid embroidery designs

The Royal Present standard license allows both personal use and small-business use of finished embroidered items. You may make gifts and sell physical products stitched with free or paid Royal Present designs through Etsy, your own shop, craft fairs or local markets.

Industrial or factory-scale production is not permitted under the standard license. The digital embroidery files themselves may not be sold, shared, exchanged, copied, uploaded to another website or redistributed in any form.
