How to embroider the cross on satin

Use a sharp 75/11 embroidery needle and replace it if it begins to snag the satin. The needle plate, hoop and embroidery area should be clean because even a small mark can remain visible on pale ceremonial fabric.

For a lined baptism pillow or a garment where the reverse side will be concealed, use a soft lightweight cut-away or no-show mesh stabilizer. It remains behind the embroidery and supports the stitches during laundering and long-term storage.

For a christening towel or another project where the reverse side remains visible, a lightweight wash-away backing can be used when the fabric and thread are suitable for rinsing. Remove it according to the stabilizer manufacturer’s instructions and allow the textile to dry flat.

Thread colour ideas

White-on-white embroidery creates a traditional understated effect on christening satin. Ivory, champagne or soft gold gives the cross a warmer heirloom appearance. Blush pink can be used for the ribbon and floral details, while pale blue, silver-grey or muted sage provides an alternative colour palette.
