Fall Pumpkin Baroque Border with Golden Leaves is a digital machine embroidery design built as a finished ornamental border rather than a simple standalone pumpkin. The composition combines an orange pumpkin, golden autumn leaves and large baroque scrolls. Five prepared sizes include one horizontal and four vertical layouts for towels, table runners, placemats, napkins, pillow bands, tote bags, aprons and seasonal clothing. Madeira Classic Rayon 40 color chart

The production chart uses 8 unique Madeira Classic Rayon 40 colors. Repeated stops are not duplicated below. The screen swatch is a visual guide only; use the Madeira number as the primary reference when selecting thread.

If you use another thread brand, use the free Madeira Thread Exchange converter to find the closest available matches. Screen colors are not an exact substitute for a physical thread chart.

Border construction

The gold scrollwork is relatively open, while the pumpkin and leaves carry most of the stitch load. Madeira 1006 adds the dark leaf veins, pumpkin segment lines and final contour work, so stable hooping matters through the entire stitch-out.

This is a finished decorative border, not a seamless endless repeat. The scroll ends are ornamental and are not designed to connect automatically. For a long runner or tablecloth, use separate placements or a mirrored pair.

• tablecloth accents rather than a heavy full-perimeter repeat;
• pillow bands, tote bags and apron panels;
• wide woven sashes, skirt panels, jacket sections and Thanksgiving costume pieces;
• seasonal banners and vertical textile panels.

Fabric and stabilizer

For stable linen, cotton, twill or gabardine, start with tear-away backing. A practical starting formula is fabric weight ÷ 3 ≈ backing weight. A 4.5 oz/yd² woven fabric starts around 1.5 oz/yd² backing; a 6 oz/yd² linen starts around 2 oz/yd².

For medium-weight stable fabric, OESD Medium Weight TearAway 1.5 oz is a good starting point. For the 43100–52800 stitch sizes, dense linen or a softer woven fabric, use OESD Heavy Weight TearAway or two lighter tear-away layers if testing shows rippling.

For hard-to-hoop towel ends, napkin corners or narrow garment sections, OESD StabilStick TearAway or another pressure-sensitive tear-away backing is useful because the item can be positioned on top of the hooped stabilizer. On terry cloth, add a thin water-soluble topping so the leaf veins and pumpkin outlines stay above the pile.

Use a new 75/11 embroidery needle with standard 40-weight thread. On a firm multilayer project, test 80/12. Stitch the complete chosen size on the actual fabric and stabilizer combination before embroidering the finished item.

Placement notes

The horizontal 198.6x88.1 mm file is the easiest choice for the lower edge of a towel, a placemat or a runner band. The four vertical versions work better at runner ends, on tall textile panels, on the side of a tote or on a wide sash.

Mark both the center and a straight baseline before hooping. The long baroque scrolls make even a slight tilt easy to see once the finished towel or runner is laid flat.

Questions and answers

How much thread should I have ready before starting?

The production charts show total thread use from 124.23 m (135.86 yd) for the smallest file to 230.06 m (251.60 yd) for the largest. If you plan a pair of runner ends or several matching towels, calculate the total before starting so you do not run short of one of the pumpkin or gold shades halfway through the set.

Which version is best for a towel border?

The 198.6x88.1 mm horizontal version is the most natural towel layout because it spreads across the lower edge without using much height. For a narrower towel, use the 78.9x178.0 mm file vertically near one side rather than forcing a wide composition into a small area.

Can I use the vertical files as a pair on a table runner?

Yes. Place one design at each end and rotate the second file 180 degrees so the two compositions read as a pair. Measure both centers from the same finished edge and keep the same baseline distance on both ends.

What happens to the dark outline on black or charcoal linen?

Madeira 1006 can lose contrast on very dark fabric. Test the palette first and, if necessary, replace only that thread with a lighter chocolate, bronze or warm gold outline. The embroidery file does not need to be edited just to change the thread color.

Can I embroider this border on a waffle towel?

Yes, but the texture needs control. Use tear-away backing underneath and a thin water-soluble topping above the waffle surface so the pumpkin contour and fine leaf veins stay visible instead of sinking between the raised cells. Test the horizontal size first because it places a substantial stitch load across a wide area.

Do I automatically need cut-away for the 52800-stitch version?

No. On a stable woven linen or cotton, start with correctly weighted tear-away. The stitch count matters, but fabric stability and hooping matter just as much. If one layer is not enough, a second lighter tear-away layer is often a cleaner solution than leaving permanent cut-away under table linens.

Can I make the gold scrollwork metallic?

Yes, as a deliberate thread substitution. Test the scrollwork first with a metallic needle and slower machine speed. The original chart uses standard Madeira Classic Rayon 40, so switching to metallic changes both sheen and handling. Keep the pumpkin and leaf colors in standard embroidery thread unless you specifically want a much more decorative finish.

Is this design a seamless repeating border?

No. The outer scrolls are decorative end shapes, not matching repeat points. For a long tablecloth or runner, leave space between placements, use a mirrored pair, or combine this design with a dedicated Royal Present baroque border or corner set.
