Minimum Hoop Sizes

For the 129.3x154.3 mm (5.09x6.07") file: use a 130x180 mm (5x7") hoop.

For the 138.8x164.8 mm (5.46x6.49") file: use a 140x200 mm (5.5x7.9") hoop.

Madeira Classic Color Chart

The color chart uses 5 thread colors and 5 color changes; Madeira Classic 1006 is stitched twice. Swatches are approximate, so use the Madeira number and a physical manufacturer color chart when matching thread.

Stabilizing the Dense Fill

This design contains 35,432–39,139 stitches and a large filled area. For firm cotton, linen, gabardine or home-decor fabric, use a medium cut-away stabilizer of approximately 60–80 g/m² (1.8–2.4 oz/yd²), such as Madeira Weblon Cut Away, Gunold Cut Away or Sulky Cut-Away Plus.

For knit, sweatshirt fleece or another flexible fabric, use 70–80 g/m² (2.1–2.4 oz/yd²) cut-away backing and do not stretch the fabric while hooping. Madeira Cotton Fix or Gunold Filmoplast Strong can help hold hard-to-hoop fabric, but add cut-away underneath for permanent support.

On terry or other raised-pile fabric, place a light water-soluble film on top, such as Madeira Avalon Film, Gunold Solvy Film or Sulky Solvy. It keeps the eyes, seams and outlines above the loops but does not replace the cut-away backing underneath.

For the test sewout, start with 40 wt embroidery thread, an 80/12 embroidery needle and a speed of 550–650 stitches per minute. A 75/11 needle may work on firm stable fabric. Confirm the final setup with a complete test on the same fabric and stabilizer as the finished project.

How to Keep the Eyes and Outlines Aligned

• Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together without stretching or skewing them.
• Use a basting box when your machine or embroidery software provides one.
• Do not loosen the hoop screw or pull the fabric after hooping.
• If the black lines shift away from the orange fill, strengthen the backing first and reduce the machine speed.
• Sew the complete design on a test sample before embroidering the finished item.

Halloween Thread Tip

For a glow-in-the-dark effect, replace Madeira 1223 in the eyes with glow thread while keeping the remaining colors unchanged. Test the specialty thread first, use the needle recommended by its manufacturer, reduce speed to approximately 450–550 stitches per minute and check that it feeds freely through every guide. For a moodier palette, change the main orange fill to muted rust while keeping the eyes much lighter than the outline.

Technical Questions

Can I use tear-away stabilizer by itself?

Tear-away is not recommended as the only backing for this large dense fill. Once removed, it no longer supports the fabric, which can lead to rippling and outline shift. Use cut-away backing of approximately 60–80 g/m² (1.8–2.4 oz/yd²); test two layers placed at right angles on thin or flexible fabric.

What should I check if the black outline shifts away from the fill?

Check fabric tension in the hoop, the hoop screw, play in the hoop attachment and the stiffness of the backing. Add a basting box, use a second cut-away layer when needed and reduce machine speed. If the shift repeats in the same area on a stable test sample, review the balance between stitch density, fabric and stabilizer in Perfecting Stitch Density, Fabric and Stabilizer Balance.

Why does the fabric ripple around the pumpkin?

Ripples that appear after unhooping usually indicate that the fabric was stretched while hooping. Ripples that develop during the fill usually mean the backing is too weak for the fabric and stitch count. Do not pull the fabric after hooping; repeat the test with a firmer or additional cut-away layer.

How should I embroider the design on terry cloth?

Use cut-away stabilizer underneath and a light water-soluble film on top. The film keeps the small facial lines above the loops but does not strengthen the fabric from below. Choose a medium or dense terry fabric for this large filled motif and complete a full test sewout first.
