Gold Crown Machine Embroidery Design is a one-color royal motif supplied in three larger sizes. The balanced scrolls, pointed arches and satin details work well on towels, robes, table linen, costumes, gift bags and heraldic decor.

If you have not stitched this crown before, begin with the free 3x3 test version. It lets you check the file format, stabilizer, needle and gold thread on your own machine before purchasing the larger size set.

Try the crown free before buying three larger sizes

The free crown is a complete test file, not a preview image.
Its size is 74.8x52.8 mm with 6754 stitches. Open the separate free product page, start the 60-second timer there and download the file without registration or purchase. Stitch it on the same fabric, stabilizer and thread planned for the larger crown.

Open the Free Crown Download Page

The free stitch-out is useful for checking thread delivery, tension and fabric support. It cannot predict every detail of the largest file: the 126.6x178.4 mm crown contains 20518 stitches and runs much longer, so keep the machine clean and use a fresh needle before starting that size.

Which crown size should you choose?

  • 99.2x70.4 mm: the most versatile size for guest towels, children’s robes, napkins, small pouches and 4x4 hoop projects.
  • 119.0x84.6 mm: a wider presentation for hand towels, table linen, decorative pockets and medium gift bags.
  • 126.6x178.4 mm: the statement size for pillow fronts, banners, costume panels, large towels and framed heraldic decor.

Print a full-size template or use the machine’s positioning screen before hooping. Check the crown against seams, pockets and towel borders, then mark both center lines.

Madeira gold thread options

The crown can be stitched with either true metallic thread or an ordinary gold-colored 40-weight thread. Metallic gives a foil-like sparkle; rayon and polyester create a smoother gold color and are easier for everyday laundering. Do not substitute a thick 20- or 30-weight thread without a test because the file was digitized for standard 40-weight thread.

Madeira thread Color Number Name Finish Care and best use
CR Metallic 40 4207 Gold Medal True metallic, balanced gold Soft metallic with strong abrasion resistance; washable up to 95°C according to the CR 40 specification. Good first metallic choice.
CR Metallic 40 4208 Gold Nugget True metallic, deep antique gold Washable up to 95°C and abrasion resistant. A warmer choice for medieval, baroque and heritage projects.
FS Metallic 40 4002 Gold 2 Traditional bright metallic Official wash-fastness rating is 4-5 at 60°C. Shade 4002 may oxidize, so use mild detergent and avoid chlorine bleach.
Polyneon 40 1725 Gold Non-metallic, glossy polyester The practical choice for towels, robes and frequently washed items. Polyneon is chlorine resistant and colorfast at up to 95°C.
Classic Rayon 40 1159 Mustard / Antique Gold Non-metallic, soft rayon sheen Elegant on table linen and decorative textiles. Suitable for home laundering, but Classic rayon is not bleach resistant.

The color squares are screen approximations. Metallic thread changes with the angle of light, and monitor colors cannot replace a physical thread sample.

Metallic-thread setup that prevents most breaks

  1. Install a fresh metallic or embroidery needle with a larger eye. For Madeira CR 40 and FS 40, begin with the needle range printed for the thread; 75/11 is a sensible household-machine test size.
  2. Let the thread relax before it enters the tension discs. A separate thread stand creates a longer path and helps remove kinks.
  3. Start at approximately 350-400 stitches per minute. Increase speed only after a clean test; the largest crown has long stitch runs.
  4. Rethread with the presser foot raised, then check that the spool cap or net does not trap the metallic wrap.
  5. If shredding continues, replace the needle first. Then inspect the thread guides, embroidery foot, needle plate and bobbin area for lint or a burr.

Do not spray household silicone, furniture polish or machine oil onto the thread cone or into the tension system. These products can stain fabric, contaminate tension discs and create a new problem instead of fixing thread delivery.

Fabric and stabilizer lifehacks

  • Tea towels and stable cotton: prewash, dry and press first. Hoop the fabric together with medium-weight cutaway stabilizer. The backing supports the crown during repeated washing.
  • Terry towels and fleece: use medium cutaway underneath and lightweight water-soluble topper above the fabric so satin stitches stay on the surface instead of sinking into the pile.
  • Sweatshirts and knitwear: use cutaway or no-show mesh underneath. Do not stretch the knit while hooping; add water-soluble topper on ribbed or textured fabric.
  • Velvet or fabric prone to hoop marks: test a scrap first. Hoop the stabilizer firmly and secure the fabric without crushing the nap; use topper over the surface.
  • Dense placement near an edge: keep the crown away from thick seams, zippers and towel borders. Uneven hoop height encourages flagging and registration shifts.

The free 3x3 crown is ideal for a material test. Use the same fabric, backing, topper, needle and thread planned for the final item. If the sample puckers, strengthen the stabilization before moving to the larger file instead of changing the design size.

Washing and pressing the finished crown

  • Follow the lowest care limit among the fabric, stabilizer, thread and finished item.
  • Turn garments and removable textiles inside out when possible and use a mild detergent.
  • Do not apply a hot iron directly to metallic thread. Press from the reverse through a cloth without flattening the stitches.
  • Choose Polyneon 40 for towels or garments exposed to frequent washing or chlorine. Choose metallic thread when reflective shine is the priority.
  • For FS Metallic 40 shade 4002, avoid chlorine bleach and prolonged damp storage because the manufacturer notes a possibility of oxidation.

Digital delivery and file use

After purchase, download the ZIP archive and unzip it before transferring a file to the embroidery machine. Choose the format supported by your machine and confirm the selected size against the actual sewing field of the hoop.

The digital embroidery files may not be resold, copied, exchanged, uploaded to groups or redistributed. Keep a backup copy of the original archive and do not rename the file extension.

Frequently asked questions

Is the free crown included in this three-size set?

No. This product contains the three larger sizes listed above. The 74.8x52.8 mm test crown is downloaded separately from the free product page without registration or purchase.

Does the smallest paid size fit a 4x4 hoop?

Yes. The 99.2x70.4 mm crown fits a standard 100x100 mm, or 4x4-inch, sewing field. Always confirm the usable field shown by your machine.

Which hoop is needed for the largest crown?

The 126.6x178.4 mm file requires a 130x180 mm sewing field or larger.

Can the entire crown be stitched with metallic thread?

Yes. Use a smooth 40-weight metallic intended for machine embroidery, a fresh suitable needle and a slower starting speed. Test the free crown with the same thread first.

Which gold thread is best for towels?

For towels washed frequently, Madeira Polyneon 40 color 1725 gives a gold appearance without metallic foil and offers strong wash and chlorine resistance. Add water-soluble topper on terry cloth.

Why does metallic thread shred during the crown?

The usual causes are an old or undersized needle, excessive speed or tension, a short or obstructed thread path, lint in the tension or bobbin area, or a burr on the embroidery foot or needle plate.
