Vintage Conch Shell Line Art is a one-color digital machine embroidery design supplied in three sizes. The motif shows a large spiral conch with a wide flared lip, raised whorls and fine engraving-style hatching. Its horizontal shape works on linen napkins, decorative towels, shirt pockets and cuffs, zipper pouches, pillows, table runners, beach totes and yacht textiles. This listing contains downloadable files for an embroidery machine, not a finished embroidered item.

What the motif shows and how it stitches

A conch is recognizable by its high spiral and broad flared outer lip. This design creates that volume with running contours and short directional hatching rather than a dense fill. The fabric remains visible between the lines, so the embroidery stays lighter and more flexible than a solid stitched patch.

All three color charts show 0 color changes. The outer silhouette, lip edges, spiral whorls and shaded lines stitch in one thread color from start to finish. This is open contour-and-hatching embroidery without satin-filled areas or a solid background.

Hoop compatibility for all three sizes

Hoop size Included design size Orientation
4x4 in (100x100 mm) Size 1 only — 3.87x2.17 in (98.4x55.2 mm) Horizontal
4x6.69 in (100x170 mm) Sizes 1–3 — up to 4.69x2.63 in (119.0x66.8 mm) Rotate the design 90 degrees
5x7 in (130x180 mm) Sizes 1–3 — up to 4.69x2.63 in (119.0x66.8 mm) Horizontal or vertical

The first file is 3.87 in wide and leaves very little clearance inside a nominal 4x4 embroidery field. Run the machine trace function before stitching. Sizes 2 and 3 are wider than 4 in and do not fit a 4x4 field.

Madeira color from the design chart

Color Thread What it stitches Visual result
Blue purple Madeira Classic 40 No. 1366 Dark Purple Iris The entire shell: outer contour, flared lip, spiral whorls and hatched shadows Deep ink-like linework with a cool violet undertone

Madeira describes Classic 40 No. 1366 as Dark Purple Iris and Blue Purple. It is not a standard navy; it is a deep blue-violet shade. This same number appears in all three supplied color charts. The square is an on-screen guide, so use a physical Madeira color card when an exact match is required.

Fabric Thread Effect
White or ivory linen Madeira No. 1366 Strong ink-drawing contrast and clear hatching
Natural unbleached linen Madeira No. 1366 Vintage marine illustration appearance
Pale blue-gray cotton Madeira No. 1366 Quiet tonal coastal palette
Dark navy fabric Ivory or white thread Crisp reverse-bluework contrast

Use the three sizes as one composition

Project Recommended size Why it works
Napkin corner or shirt cuff 3.87x2.17 in (98.4x55.2 mm) The most compact file and the only 4x4 option
Towel, pocket or zipper pouch 4.26x2.39 in (108.2x60.8 mm) Readable detail without overwhelming a small item
Pillow, runner or tote panel 4.69x2.63 in (119.0x66.8 mm) The larger scale emphasizes the whorls and flared lip

The three files can form a perspective-style shell collection: place the largest shell in the center and the medium and small versions at slightly different heights. Their combined width without gaps is 12.82 in (32.56 cm). With 0.8–1.2 in (2–3 cm) between motifs, allow approximately 14.4–15.2 in (36.5–38.5 cm) for the finished group.

Placement trick for a zipper pouch or tote

Embroider the shell on the flat panel before inserting the zipper or sewing the side seams. Mark the finished rectangle inside the seam allowances, not just the raw fabric edge. Center the embroidery within that finished rectangle. Otherwise, the motif may appear too low after the zipper is installed or partly disappear into a side seam.

Leave clearance above the highest spiral so the zipper foot and topstitching do not cross the embroidery. If the panel also has a pocket, arrange paper templates for both the pocket and shell before selecting one of the three sizes.

Fabric, stabilizer and setup

Material Stabilizer Practical setup
Firm linen or cotton Medium-weight tear-away Hoop fabric and stabilizer together without stretching
Loose or open-weave linen Fusible tear-away Stabilize the weave before hooping so the hatching cannot shift fabric threads
Poplin or shirt panel Soft tear-away; light cut-away for unstable fabric Embroider the flat pocket, cuff or yoke before assembly
Canvas or bag fabric Medium tear-away or light cut-away Mark the finished panel inside the seam allowances
Low-pile towel Tear-away below and water-soluble film on top Prefer a smooth woven band; deep terry can hide the fine lines

Use a 75/11 embroidery needle with Madeira Classic 40. Test the same needle on firm canvas before changing to a larger size. Check stabilizer, tension and hooping before altering design density.

How to test fine line quality

Stitch the smallest file on a scrap of the same fabric with the intended stabilizer. If bobbin thread appears as dots on the front, adjust upper-thread tension in small steps. If curves become angular or the fabric puckers between hatched lines, the cause is more often weak stabilization or stretched hooping than the file size.

Remove the stabilizer and press the sample from the reverse before judging the linework. Prewash natural linen because later shrinkage can distort the open drawing around the conch.

FAQ

Which included size fits a 4x4 hoop?
Only Size 1 — 3.87x2.17 in (98.4x55.2 mm). Run the machine trace function before stitching because the file uses almost the full 4 in width.

Do all three sizes fit a 4x6.69 hoop?
Yes. Rotate the files 90 degrees. The largest size then occupies 2.63 in in width and 4.69 in in height.

Are there any color changes?
No. All three charts show 0 color changes. The complete conch stitches with Madeira Classic 40 No. 1366 or another single thread color.

Is Madeira No. 1366 a navy blue?
Not exactly. Madeira identifies it as Dark Purple Iris and Blue Purple. It is a deep blue-violet shade that resembles ink linework on white or natural fabric.

Can I stitch the design with No. 30 cotton thread?
Yes, after a test. Thicker matte cotton makes the fine hatching look heavier. The supplied chart specifies Madeira Classic 40. Use cotton as the top thread and keep a finer bobbin thread underneath.

Does the design need a water-soluble topper?
Not on smooth linen, cotton, poplin or canvas. Use topper only on a lightly textured or low-pile towel surface. Deep terry can hide the engraved lines.

May I sell finished items made with this design?
Yes, finished physical items may be sold in small handmade quantities. The digital embroidery files may not be copied, shared, exchanged or resold.
