Add your own lettering in embroidery software or use the lettering function of your embroidery machine. Choose a letter that remains clearly readable inside the detailed floral frame and leave visible space between the monogram and the surrounding ornament.

Personalized Khokhloma pillow

The square shape is well suited to the centre of a decorative pillow. Embroider the frame on the flat front panel before assembling the pillow. Add one large initial, a family monogram or a short name inside the open centre.

For a traditional Khokhloma effect, use red and gold tones on black fabric. A white or natural-coloured background produces a lighter folk-art interpretation and makes the darker outlines more visible.

Because this is a large and detailed design, leave enough fabric around the embroidery for seam allowances. Centre the file on the prepared pillow panel rather than trying to embroider an already assembled cushion cover.

Khokhloma monogram on a tote bag

A structured black canvas or twill tote bag provides a practical background for this frame. Place the design on the bag panel before construction whenever possible. Add an initial to create a personalized shopping bag, library bag, project bag or handmade folk-style gift.

Stabilizing this detailed frame

This frame has a high stitch count and many decorative details. For a lined pillow, tote bag or wall panel, use medium-weight cut-away stabilizer to provide permanent support. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer securely without stretching or distorting the fabric.

For stable cotton, linen or twill, make a complete test stitch with the selected stabilizer before embroidering the finished project. If the fabric begins to pucker, increase the support rather than tightening the fabric excessively in the hoop.

When stitching on velvet, velour or another fabric with a raised surface, place water-soluble film on top so the smaller details remain above the pile. Use cut-away stabilizer underneath when its reverse side will be concealed inside the completed pillow or bag.

Choosing thread for Khokhloma embroidery

Polyester embroidery thread is a practical choice for tote bags, table linens and frequently handled items because it tolerates washing and abrasion well. Rayon thread provides a softer, glossy appearance that works beautifully on decorative pillows, framed textiles and display pieces.

Traditional red, gold and black create the most recognizable Khokhloma palette. Burgundy, copper and antique gold can produce a more subdued vintage interpretation. Use the supplied colour chart as a guide and test the complete palette against the selected background fabric.
