Fabric and stabilizer guide for embroidered monograms

• Cotton and linen: use an appropriate tear-away stabilizer for a stable woven fabric. Prewash fabric that may shrink.
• Knitwear and stretch fabrics: use cut-away stabilizer to support the lettering after washing and wearing.
• Terry towels: place tear-away stabilizer underneath when the reverse remains visible and water-soluble topping over the pile.
• Velvet and velour: avoid crushing the surface in the hoop. Float the fabric when necessary and use water-soluble film on top.
• Canvas and tote bags: stabilize according to the density of the selected letter and avoid stitching over thick seams or handles.

Size, hoop field and machine format

Check the exact dimensions in millimetres and inches on the selected product page. Compare those dimensions with the embroidery field supported by your machine. Nominal labels such as 4x4 or 5x7 are rounded names and may not represent the exact field in millimetres.

Available file formats vary by product. PES is commonly used by Brother and Baby Lock, JEF by Janome, and VP3 by Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking. DST and EXP are supported by many commercial or professional systems. Always confirm the required format in the manual for your exact machine model.

Monogram placement ideas
