Hoop size for the Christmas Letter Y

The design requires an embroidery field of at least 87.0 × 56.0 mm (3.43 × 2.20 inches).

  • Minimum technical fit: 90 × 90 mm (3.54 × 3.54 inches). This leaves only 3 mm of total clearance across the design width, so accurate centering is essential.
  • Recommended hoop: 100 × 100 mm (3.94 × 3.94 inches), commonly called a 4 × 4-inch hoop. It provides safer positioning space around the monogram.
  • Does not fit: 80 × 80 mm (3.15 × 3.15 inches), because the design is 87 mm wide.

Embroidering the Letter Y on a White Velvet Stocking

Embroider the stocking front while it is still a flat, oversized fabric panel. Determine the direction of the velvet nap before placement and keep it running consistently toward the toe of the stocking.

Hoop a self-adhesive tear-away stabilizer and place the velvet on its adhesive surface instead of compressing the pile between the hoop rings. Secure the panel with a basting frame if your machine provides this function. A light water-soluble film on top prevents the small poinsettia details and letter edges from sinking into the velvet. Read more in the Royal Present guide to tear-away and self-adhesive embroidery stabilizers.

If the stocking will be decorated with pearls or beads, attach them by hand after the machine embroidery is complete but before final assembly. Keep embellishments outside the embroidery path and seam allowance so they cannot strike the presser foot or interfere with sewing the stocking pieces together.

Create a Coordinated JOY Christmas Project

Combine this Y with the matching Christmas Monogram J and Christmas Monogram O to spell JOY across three stockings, reusable gift bags or velvet wall pennants.

Print placement templates at 100% and position every letter at the same distance from the stocking cuff. Align the letters by their visual baseline rather than forcing the individual designs to have identical overall dimensions. Use the same thread palette for all three monograms to make the separate pieces look like one coordinated Christmas set.

Digital Embroidery Product

This listing contains digital machine embroidery files only. Unzip the downloaded archive and transfer the format supported by your embroidery machine. Test-stitch the complete design on a velvet offcut with the intended backing, topping and thread colors before embroidering the final stocking panel.
