Hoop Size for Christmas Letter U

This design requires a minimum embroidery field of 100x100 mm (3.94x3.94", commonly called 4x4"). It does not fit an 80x80 mm hoop because the letter is 94.4 mm wide.

The design can be embroidered on compact 4x4 machines such as the Brother Skitch PP1 and Baby Lock Verve. It also fits larger embroidery machines when a compatible hoop and file format are selected.

Placement note: the design uses almost the entire width of a 4x4 field, leaving approximately 5.6 mm of total horizontal clearance. Check the cuff pattern and seam allowances before hooping.

Personalized Velvet Christmas Stocking

Use the letter U as a standalone monogram for a family member whose first name, surname or nickname begins with U. The poinsettia and pine-cone arrangement already forms a complete Christmas composition, so an additional embroidery frame is unnecessary.

Mark the stocking cuff pattern on an oversized piece of velvet, but do not cut it out yet. Position and embroider the monogram while the fabric is still flat. Cut the cuff and assemble the stocking only after the embroidery has been completed and checked.

How to Embroider the Letter U on Velvet

Before marking the cuff, check the direction of the velvet pile. All stocking pieces should be cut with the pile running in the same direction so their color and sheen remain consistent.

Hoop a self-adhesive tear-away stabilizer and place the velvet on top without stretching or crushing it. Add a light water-soluble topping over the pile and use a basting frame if this function is available on your machine. For stretch velvet, add lightweight cut-away backing for permanent support.

Rayon or viscose 40-weight thread gives the poinsettia and letter a soft festive shine. Polyester thread is preferable if the stocking will be handled frequently or washed. Never press the velvet pile directly with a hot iron.
