Suitable Embroidery Hoops

The minimum suitable hoop is 80x80 mm (3.15x3.15"). A standard 100x100 mm (3.94x3.94", commonly called 4x4") hoop is recommended because it provides more convenient positioning on the stocking cuff.

The design fits compact 4x4 embroidery machines such as the Brother PE545 and Brother SE700, as well as larger machines that support a 100x100 mm embroidery field.

Christmas Monogram S on White Velvet

This poinsettia letter S is shown on the white velvet cuff of a quilted Christmas stocking decorated with white pearls. For accurate placement, mark the cuff pattern and its centerline on an oversized piece of velvet, embroider the monogram first, and cut and sew the cuff only after the embroidery is complete.

How to Embroider the Letter S on Velvet

Choose dense, non-stretch velvet. Do not hoop the velvet directly because hoop pressure can flatten the pile and leave permanent marks. Hoop a self-adhesive tear-away stabilizer, place the velvet on its adhesive surface and add a light water-soluble topping over the fabric so the letter and small floral details remain above the pile.

Use a fresh 75/11 embroidery needle and test the design on a velvet offcut. Remove the topping carefully without soaking the fabric. Do not press the velvet pile with a hot iron. More practical instructions are available in our guide to machine embroidery on velvet.

Quilt the stocking body separately and attach the pearls only after all machine embroidery is finished. The embroidery needle must never pass through or strike a pearl.

Matching Personalized Christmas Stockings

Combine the letter S with the Christmas monogram T and Christmas monogram V to make individual stockings for different family members.

Use the same white velvet, thread palette and pearl quilting for every stocking. Position each monogram at the same distance from the lower edge of the cuff so the separate initials form one coordinated Christmas mantel collection.
