Embroidering on Tea Towels

Embroidering on tea towels is a delightful way to personalize your kitchen and create charming gifts for loved ones. Tea towels are typically made of cotton, a fabric that shrinks when laundered, so it's essential to wash, dry, and press them before starting your embroidery project. This preparation ensures your design remains crisp and aligned even after washing.

For best results, use a medium-weight cutaway stabilizer, which supports the fabric fibers during embroidery and through multiple washes. Hoop the towel together with the stabilizer, aligning the center marks with the hoop to ensure precise stitching. A size 11 needle works well for tea towels, whether it's a sharp sewing or embroidery needle.

Once your design is complete, carefully trim the stabilizer, leaving about half an inch around the embroidery. If you're using a transparent towel and prefer not to have the stabilizer visible, consider using a tear-away stabilizer, though this is best reserved for simple, light designs to avoid shifting and gapping.
