Stitching guidance for kitchen textiles

On firm cotton, twill, or waffle-weave towelling, use a medium-weight stabilizer extending beyond every side of the hoop. Tear-away backing is suitable for the separate steak and lettering. For the tall complete composition on soft or loosely woven linen, use cut-away backing so the long vertical layout stays flat and the scrollwork does not pull the fabric.

For a ready-made terry towel, add water-soluble topping above the pile so the fine curls stay visible. On a finished apron, mark the vertical centreline with a washable marker, secure the backing to the wrong side with temporary adhesive spray, and confirm that the pocket, ties, and any inner layer are outside the stitching path.

FAQ

What fabric works best for a kitchen towel or apron?
Smooth cotton, firm linen, twill, and apron-weight cotton without elastane show the outline and inner scrollwork clearly. Test thin linen first: if the fabric gathers around the curls, replace tear-away backing with cut-away backing.

How should I position the complete design on an apron?
Mark the vertical centre of the bib area and place the design above the pocket, leaving clear space from the top edge and seams. Do not hoop the apron pocket or lining with the outer layer; secure those parts away from the needle path before stitching.

Can the steak and lettering be used separately?
Yes. The set contains the steak motif, the word Beef, and the word Meat as separate files in three sizes. You can build a custom layout for a napkin, towel, apron pocket, butcher shop textile, or menu cover without altering the original files.

Why do the scrolls look less defined on terry towelling?
The pile can cover fine stitched lines after the hoop is removed. Water-soluble topping on the surface and stabilizer underneath create a smoother stitching field; gently remove the topping after embroidery. Avoid stretching the towel while hooping so the outer steak contour remains smooth.
