What is this design? Khokhloma Rowan Round Frame is a digital machine embroidery design featuring red rowan berries, green leaves, golden foliage and a circular center for adding an initial or monogram. The design comes in three large sizes for towels, tote bags, pillows, table linens and decorative textile panels. The letter and font shown in the example are not included.

Letter and font are not included. Download matching capital letters here.

This round machine embroidery frame is inspired by the rich colors and botanical ornaments of Khokhloma folk art. Clusters of red rowan berries alternate with green leaves and golden decorative branches, forming a balanced circular wreath around an open monogram area.

The stitched example shows the design on a black kitchen towel with a golden monogram in the center. Black fabric creates the strongest contrast, although the frame also looks elegant on white, natural linen, deep green and burgundy textiles.

Minimum Embroidery Field

  • 170.3×167.7 mm size: minimum common field 180×300 mm (7.09×11.81 in) or 200×200 mm (7.87×7.87 in).
  • 180.6×177.7 mm size: minimum field 200×200 mm (7.87×7.87 in) or larger.
  • 198.2×195.1 mm size: minimum field 200×200 mm (7.87×7.87 in) or larger.

The simplest shared requirement for all three files is a 200×200 mm embroidery field, commonly marketed as an 8×8 inch hoop. The exact conversion of 200×200 mm is 7.87×7.87 inches because manufacturers use rounded inch names for hoop classes.

To understand the difference between rounded hoop names and exact stitching fields, read our guide to embroidery hoop sizes and actual stitching fields.

Madeira Thread Colors from the Gallery Charts

The color charts shown in the product gallery use three thread colors:

  • Madeira Classic 1068 or 1125: golden circle and decorative foliage;
  • Madeira Classic 1051: rowan leaves;
  • Madeira Classic 1146: red rowan berries.

These Madeira numbers are a color reference. If you use another thread brand, choose a warm mustard gold, medium leaf green and rich rowan red.

For frequently washed kitchen towels and tote bags, polyester embroidery thread is the more practical choice because it tolerates regular washing and color exposure well. Rayon thread gives a softer, more fluid sheen and is particularly attractive on decorative pillows, wall panels and textiles that are washed less often.

Where to Embroider the Khokhloma Round Frame

  • black kitchen towels with decorative lace or trim;
  • personalized tote bags and reusable shopping bags;
  • linen table runners and large napkins;
  • decorative pillow covers;
  • fabric panels and framed textile art;
  • gift bags with a family initial;
  • chair backs and traditional-style home décor;
  • personalized towels for a folk-style kitchen.

The round structure works especially well as a central composition. Add one large initial, a two-letter monogram, a family surname or a short date inside the golden circle. Select a letter with enough visual weight to remain balanced against the detailed berry wreath.

How to Embroider This Design on a Black Kitchen Towel

  1. Prewash the towel if the fabric may shrink.
  2. Mark the center of the future embroidery with a removable marker or thread basting.
  3. Hoop the smooth towel fabric and a medium-weight tear-away stabilizer together.
  4. For loosely woven linen, use adhesive tear-away stabilizer or add a second light tear-away layer at a different angle.
  5. Do not stretch the fabric while hooping. Distortion can turn the round frame into an oval after the towel is removed.
  6. Run the machine’s trace or boundary-check function before stitching.
  7. Remove the stabilizer carefully after embroidery so the reverse of the towel remains neat.

A water-soluble topping is not normally required on smooth linen or cotton. Use topping only if the design is stitched on terry cloth, velvet, velour or another textured surface where the stitches could sink into the pile.

Stabilizer for Tote Bags and Pillow Covers

For cotton canvas, twill and stable bag fabric, use a medium-weight tear-away stabilizer. If the bag fabric is loosely woven or the embroidery will be exposed to frequent use, a medium cut-away stabilizer gives the large circular design more permanent support. It can be used when the reverse side will be hidden by a lining.

Embroider the flat fabric piece before sewing the tote bag or pillow whenever possible. This makes hooping, placement and stabilizer removal much easier. Our guide to machine embroidery on shopping bags includes this Khokhloma round frame as a project example.

How to Create a Coordinated Khokhloma Set

Use the round frame as the main monogram element on a towel, pillow or tote bag. Add the Khokhloma square frame to a companion pillow or textile panel.

For a coordinated table setting, place the round frame in the center of a runner and use the Khokhloma border with rowan along the ends. Repeating the same red berries, green leaves and golden accents makes the separate pieces look like one planned collection.

Important Before Resizing

This design should not be made smaller by ordinary scaling. It contains numerous small berries, thin decorative elements and detailed leaf stitches. Reducing the finished stitch file can make satin elements too narrow, increase density and affect the clean round shape.

Choose one of the three supplied sizes. If another size is essential, use professional stitch recalculation instead of resizing the PES, DST, JEF or other finished file directly in the embroidery machine.

Digital File and License

  • The design is delivered as a ZIP archive after purchase.
  • Unzip the archive before transferring a file to the embroidery machine.
  • Select only the format supported by your machine.
  • Test the design on similar fabric and stabilizer before stitching the finished project.
  • Finished embroidered items may be produced and sold in limited quantities.
  • Bulk manufacturing is not permitted.
  • The digital files may not be copied, shared, exchanged, resold or redistributed.

Questions About the Khokhloma Round Frame

Is the monogram shown in the picture included?

No. The download contains the Khokhloma berry frame only. The font, letters and finished monogram must be added separately.

What is the minimum hoop field for all three sizes?

A 200×200 mm (7.87×7.87 in) embroidery field, commonly called an 8×8 inch hoop, accommodates all three supplied files.

Can I embroider the smallest size in a 5×7 hoop?

No. The smallest file measures 170.3×167.7 mm (6.70×6.60 in), so both dimensions cannot fit inside a 130×180 mm (5.12×7.09 in) field.

Can the frame be stitched on white fabric?

Yes. It looks striking on both black and white fabric. On white material, use a sufficiently deep red, green and warm gold so the small decorative elements remain clearly visible.

Can the design be made smaller?

Ordinary reduction is not recommended because the design contains small berries, thin lines and detailed leaf elements. Choose one of the supplied sizes or order professional resizing with stitch recalculation.

Can finished embroidered products be sold?

Yes. You may sell a limited number of finished physical items embroidered with this design. The digital files may not be sold, shared or redistributed, and bulk manufacturing is not permitted.
