Madeira Classic Rayon 40 color chart

The original color chart for this design uses three Madeira Classic Rayon 40 colors. The screen swatch is a visual guide only; use the Madeira thread number as the primary reference when selecting thread.

If you use another thread brand, use the free Madeira Thread Exchange converter to find the closest available match. Screen colors are not an exact substitute for a physical thread chart, so test the selected shades before stitching the final project.

Design construction

The composition combines filled areas in the central barley spike with lighter side elements. Most of the stitch concentration is in the center, while the hop cones and curls leave more fabric visible. On soft or stretchy materials, the center needs firm stabilization to help prevent the fabric from pulling inward during stitching.

Fabric, stabilizer, needle and thread

For stable cotton, linen, gabardine, or firm canvas, start with a medium-weight tear-away stabilizer. If the linen is loosely woven or shifts easily, use stronger support and test the design before stitching the final item.

For knits, sweatshirts, or other stretchy fabrics, use a soft cut-away stabilizer. On terry cloth, fleece, velvet, or another textured surface, add a thin water-soluble topping so the light details do not sink into the pile.

The original palette is specified in Madeira Classic Rayon 40. With standard 40-weight embroidery thread, start with a new 75/11 embroidery needle. On a heavier fabric, an 80/12 needle may work better after a test stitch.

Always test the design using the same fabric, stabilizer, needle, and thread combination planned for the finished project.

Project idea

On black, charcoal, or dark brown linen, the cream details create strong contrast while the yellow-gold barley remains the focal point. For a men's apron, home bar napkin, or decorative bar panel, the 148.6x154.2 mm version works well as a centered standalone motif and fits a 160x240 mm (6.3x9.45") hoop.

Questions and answers

Can I change the thread colors to match my fabric?

Yes. The Madeira numbers show the original palette, but you can substitute colors to suit your project. On dark fabric, keep enough contrast between the central barley spike, the foam, and the side elements. If all three colors are replaced with very similar tones, some details may visually merge. Test a new palette before stitching the final item.

Can I use 40-weight polyester instead of Madeira Classic Rayon 40?

Yes. The design can be stitched with good-quality 40-weight polyester embroidery thread. Polyester is a practical choice for aprons, napkins, and bar textiles that may be washed frequently because it is durable and colorfast. Rayon usually gives a softer, more pronounced sheen. When changing brands, match the actual thread shades rather than relying only on monitor colors.

Can I resize the design beyond the four included sizes?

It is better to use one of the prepared files. Simply scaling a finished machine file can change stitch density, stitch length, and spacing between elements. A strong reduction can make the center too dense, while enlargement without proper recalculation can create gaps. If you need another size, use the Royal Present design resizing service, which recalculates the embroidery file rather than simply stretching it.

Why can the DST file show different colors on my machine?

DST does not store the original Madeira thread numbers. Your machine or embroidery software may assign its own display colors, so seeing red, green, or another unexpected shade on screen does not mean the file is damaged. For this design, use the included JPG color chart and the Madeira numbers 1223, 1171, and 1072.

Why can outlines shift or the fabric pucker during embroidery?

This is usually caused by fabric movement during stitching: insufficient stabilization, stretching during hooping, a soft base fabric, or unsuitable tension. In this design, the central barley area carries more stitches than the open side curls, so stable support under the center is especially important. Hoop the fabric without stretching it and choose the stabilizer for the fabric and stitch load.

Will this design work on black linen?

Yes. On stable black linen, the cream and yellow-gold palette gives strong contrast and suits the beer-and-hops theme particularly well. Use an appropriate tear-away stabilizer; if the linen is loose, test stronger support first. Before stitching the final piece, check whether dark fabric shows through the filled center more than you want.

What should I check if the design does not appear on my embroidery machine?

First make sure the ZIP archive has been extracted and that you transferred the file format supported by your machine. Then check whether your machine supports the selected design dimensions. A machine may refuse to display a correctly formatted file if the design is larger than the embroidery area available on that model.
